Summary

Now in tradepaper: New York Times bestseller breaks open the obesity mystery using the brain as the key to weight loss。

Bright Line Eating has helped thousands of people from over 75 countries lose all their excess weight and keep it off。 Are you ready to join them?
In this book, Susan Peirce Thompson, Ph。D。 shares the groundbreaking weight-loss solution based on her highly acclaimed Bright Line Eating Boot Camps。 Rooted in cutting-edge neuroscience, psychology, and biology, Bright Line Eating explains why people who are desperate to lose weight fail again and again: It's because the brain blocks weight loss。
Bright Line Eating (BLE) is a simple approach designed to reverse that process。 By working with four "Bright Lines"--clear, unambiguous, boundaries--Susan Peirce Thompson shows us how to heal our brain and shift it into a mode where it is ready to shed pounds, release cravings, and stop sabotaging our weight loss goals。 Best of all, it is a program that understands that willpower cannot be relied on, and sets us up to be successful anyway。
You'll discover firsthand why traditional diet and exercise plans have failed in the past。 You'll also learn about the role addictive susceptibility plays in your personal weight-loss journey, where cravings come from, how to rewire your brain so they disappear, and more。 Susan guides you through the phases of Bright Line Eating--from weight loss to maintenance and beyond--and offers a dynamic food plan that will work for anyone。

I love this book, Susan Pierce Thompson has managed to intricately structure the information provided to the reader without grappling with indecision。 She is quick to provide science backed studies that not only explain why but more importantly how weight management can feel at times unattainable。 This is the first nutrition based book I have read that has yet to acknowledge the emotional and psychological strain that weight management harbors。

Probably best for those who really struggle with food addiction and who find it extremely difficult to lose weight。 Although I'm not overweight, I was surprised to find that I scored a 9 on the susceptibility scale。 That explained A LOT。 Probably best for those who really struggle with food addiction and who find it extremely difficult to lose weight。 Although I'm not overweight, I was surprised to find that I scored a 9 on the susceptibility scale。 That explained A LOT。 。。。more

Not enoughAs a binger, I was very excited to read this book and had heard good things about it。 It falls flat tho。 Too much woo-woo (make your bed every morning, journal, meditate) and not enough real advice (recipes, easy swaps, etc。)。 Still going to try to go sugar- and flour-free, but I think the book could have been way more informative: a pasta or bread we can eat, etc

Bullet Review:DNF at 33% or chapter 7 - which was about 6 chapters more than this deserved。 Please also note, I removed this from my "nonfiction" and "nutrition" shelves, because this horrible woo encouraging eating disorders does NOT belong among the other books on those shelves (and given what is on those shelves, that is saying a lot!)。How to Develop an Eating Disorder in 4 Easy Steps:1) No sugar。 EVER。 No agave, honey or those horrible artificial sweeteners。 No dried fruit or juice - EVER。 W Bullet Review:DNF at 33% or chapter 7 - which was about 6 chapters more than this deserved。 Please also note, I removed this from my "nonfiction" and "nutrition" shelves, because this horrible woo encouraging eating disorders does NOT belong among the other books on those shelves (and given what is on those shelves, that is saying a lot!)。How to Develop an Eating Disorder in 4 Easy Steps:1) No sugar。 EVER。 No agave, honey or those horrible artificial sweeteners。 No dried fruit or juice - EVER。 Why? Because it looks like cocaine and heroin。 Source? Some starved rats engorged on sugar rather than cocaine, therefore sugar addiction! (Not saying I 100% disagree but the science as she relays is sketchy)2) No flour。 EVER。 NONE OF IT。 No white, wheat, oat, rice, nut or anything。 Why? Because it looks like cocaine and heroin, therefore it too is addictive。 Where’s the science? It’s coming, I SWEAR!3) Eat 3 meals a day。 “Then shalt thou eat to three meals, no more, no less。 Three shall be the number of meals thou shalt eat, and the number of the meals shall be three。 Four shalt thou not eat, neither eat thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three。 Five is right out! Once the number three, being the third number, be eaten, then thou shalt stop thine fatty self from stuffing thine flabby face even if thou ist hungry for legitimate reasons!” Snacking? HEATHEN! What is WRONG WITH YOU!4) Weigh everything。 Need to taste the sauce you’re making for dinner? HEATHEN! Scotch tape that sinful mouth! Use a scale for EVERYTHING for extreme freedom。This diet is one of the most awful ones I’ve ever read, up there with Jon Gabriel and the gluten-free “Wheat Belly” and “Grain Brain” duos。Just because someone has “PhD” after their name does NOT mean you should listen to their diet quackery!!! 。。。more

Interesting premise, definitely works for a wide range of people, didn't like a few skewed graphs to overemphasize the point she was making but everything else is pretty great。 Worth reading。 Interesting premise, definitely works for a wide range of people, didn't like a few skewed graphs to overemphasize the point she was making but everything else is pretty great。 Worth reading。 。。。more

Good science, which I really enjoyed。 I didn't agree with everything。 The system she proposes is not workable for me。 I couldn't implement it, but the science and the underlying principle, bright line eating, are helpful and I can use them。 Good science, which I really enjoyed。 I didn't agree with everything。 The system she proposes is not workable for me。 I couldn't implement it, but the science and the underlying principle, bright line eating, are helpful and I can use them。 。。。more

Another diet book, this one with more current research than some others。

This book wasn't for me。 It balances on developing an eating disorder vs being thin, healthy and free。 To me, her tactics would leave me confined and not free。 I fully support excluding flour and sugar but I am not about to weigh all my meals and carry a scale with me on vacation。 However, I don't want to discourage you as for the right person - this might be exactly what you need! I think this is a great book for initial weight loss however there were several aspects about this diet that makes me question the ability of this diet to deliver long-term proper nutrition。 I would not recommend for someone how considers themselves a “foodie”

Run across this book recommended through a social media platform。 Decided to check it out and was not disappointed。 I don't know if I will follow this way of eating or not (leaning towards I will give it a try) but it was packed full of information that left me interested。 Shared the information with friends and coworkers who also are curious and now want to read the book。 Run across this book recommended through a social media platform。 Decided to check it out and was not disappointed。 I don't know if I will follow this way of eating or not (leaning towards I will give it a try) but it was packed full of information that left me interested。 Shared the information with friends and coworkers who also are curious and now want to read the book。 。。。more

Did not finish。A drug addict (meth, crack) with a PhD in cognitive science (and zero background or formal training in nutritional science or medicine) gives you a “solution” to a lifetime of diet failures due to poor willpower and too many rules。。。 BY GIVING MORE RULES。Here’s the Cliff’s Notes: No added sugar, no sugar substitutes of ANY kind。 No flour of ANY kind。 She also sprinkles in little “hints” that veganism is a great approach。This book is garbage。 Run away。

This book is extremely informative regarding the reasons we overeat and why the majority of folks are overweight。 The science and current brain research in the book are wonderfully educational and help the reader to realize they are not morally defective but have a different brain reaction than 80% of their peers to food。 Inspirational。

It's a book for food addicts。 I don't think it's a good idea to put faith in this type of eating cause personally I think the brain hates when something is off limits。 Maybe it works for someone, but not me。 It's a book for food addicts。 I don't think it's a good idea to put faith in this type of eating cause personally I think the brain hates when something is off limits。 Maybe it works for someone, but not me。 。。。more

My take away is to plan the food I’m going to eat tomorrow commit to the plan and then stick to the plan。 She insists that ALL flour and sugar be eliminates and that’s the Bright Line

I gave it two weeks, and even in those two weeks I caved a couple times and ate "Not My Food" or "NMF" but I still lost about 10lbs in that time! Sugar and flour are poisonous to me and my body does not do well when I eat them。 She makes a not-so-scientific correlation between cocaine, sugar, & flour。。。 stating that when we take the purest essence of these plants, purify and grind them up into a white powdery substance they turn into drugs。 They all affect the reward center in the brain and that's why they can be considered "addictive。" Addicts have to stay clear of these things that grip them so tightly and only cause damage to the body。 It's not for everybody, but I can definitely see how this book could be a life saver to some。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The first half was fantastic- so interesting to learn how the brain works around food and addiction。 The rest was pretty crazy。 The second half of the book encourages orthorexia (an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating)。 I realize now that this book may be intended for food addicts though the author claims it is for anyone。 Perhaps food addicts can get more out of this but to me it seems like it would trade one type of unhealthy relationship with food for another。 I would easily recommend the The first half was fantastic- so interesting to learn how the brain works around food and addiction。 The rest was pretty crazy。 The second half of the book encourages orthorexia (an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating)。 I realize now that this book may be intended for food addicts though the author claims it is for anyone。 Perhaps food addicts can get more out of this but to me it seems like it would trade one type of unhealthy relationship with food for another。 I would easily recommend the beginning of this book to anyone interested in taking a look inside their brain to understand themselves a bit better。 I also think she made a really compelling argument for quitting sugar。 However, I wouldn't recommend the second half for anyone。 。。。more

I just finished this book for the second time。 As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and a student of Holistic Addiction Medicine, I wanted to reconsider whether or not this program would be of benefit to my clients。 I am convinced that, followed as written, this plan will work for anyone who suffers from food obsession of any sort。 Susan Pierce Thompson is a credible author with science based information on how food affects the brain and other systems of the body。 Well done!

I read this from a health coach perspective。 I like what this neuroscientist is trying to do for people with significant weight to lose or who have repeatedly failed at other attempts to lose unhealthy weight。 She explains the science behind food cravings, addictions, hormones, etc。, and I truly believe knowledge is power。 She runs an online support program, video series, and Facebook group that I imagine is probably very helpful。 She has data to show that she is having WAY better LONG TERM succ I read this from a health coach perspective。 I like what this neuroscientist is trying to do for people with significant weight to lose or who have repeatedly failed at other attempts to lose unhealthy weight。 She explains the science behind food cravings, addictions, hormones, etc。, and I truly believe knowledge is power。 She runs an online support program, video series, and Facebook group that I imagine is probably very helpful。 She has data to show that she is having WAY better LONG TERM success for people losing weight than all other programs。 She advocates no flour, no added sugar, planning ahead, protein/fruits/lots of vegetables, and meticulously weighing all of your food。 Sounds simple, and it is, but it is a VERY rigid way of eating。 Perhaps that is what is needed by many that have not had success with the moderation of other methods。 I agree that it is easier to eat no sugar, than some sugar which leaves me craving more。 She advocates getting the weight off pretty quickly, even before trying to exercise。 She advocates these same "Bright Line" rules even for maintenance at your goal weight which I think would be an unfortunate way to have to live and borders on disordered eating。 I would wish a more balanced version for maintenance with a little more grace for variations and once-in-a-while foods。 *Poor eating habits and carrying extra weight are such a health crisis, putting yourself at risk for chronic disease and reduced quality of life, that it is worth giving this approach real consideration。 It could completely change your life and your future。 。。。more

Nutritionally, if Whole30 + Zone had a baby, that would be Bright Line Eating (BLE)。 This book takes something like Whole30 a step further psychologically, as it addresses sugar and flour as addictions。 The sugar/flour addiction component may not be the case for everyone, and if that’s not you, then this is probably not the book for you。 If that is you though, this book is a stark reminder that 1。) you are not alone; 2。) it’s not your fault and 3。) you can heal。 With a focus on caring for and lo Nutritionally, if Whole30 + Zone had a baby, that would be Bright Line Eating (BLE)。 This book takes something like Whole30 a step further psychologically, as it addresses sugar and flour as addictions。 The sugar/flour addiction component may not be the case for everyone, and if that’s not you, then this is probably not the book for you。 If that is you though, this book is a stark reminder that 1。) you are not alone; 2。) it’s not your fault and 3。) you can heal。 With a focus on caring for and loving yourself through weight loss, this is one of the most gentle, yet no-nonsense nutrition books I’ve come across。 Sugar is the one vice I can never seem to kick and I’m excited to keep learning more about BLE。 。。。more
